Fort Davis library friends award 3 scholarships

Lara, Merrill, Means

JEFF DAVIS COUNTY - It was a tough decision as three members of the Board of Directors of Friends of the Jeff Davis County Library selected from many promising applications last week.

Two graduates from Fort Davis and one senior of Valentine high school were awarded $1,000 each from the Friends, Nancy Robinson, and the Bryan Woolley Memorial Scholarship funds.

Zenayda Lara plans to pursue a career in accounting after her studies at the University of Texas Permian Basin. She is thought to be the first Hispanic female Salutatorian to graduate from Fort Davis.

From the same graduating class, Valedictorian John Penn Merrill has been accepted to West Texas A&M to prepare for a career in teaching. From a family of educators, Penn hopes to return to teach and coach in Fort Davis or eventually become a college professor.

Of the five graduating from Valentine, Evan T. Means will enroll in Texas Tech to learn about Global and International Studies. Her scholarship will help her with plans to become a lawyer in the future.

Nancy Robinson of the Friends of the Jeff Davis County Library began these scholarships in 2006. They have awarded over $31,000 to 28 college bound students to date.
