Furrh

WILLIAM MADISON FURRH DIED PEACEFULLY SUNDAY MORNING MAY 27, 2018 AT THE HERITAGE HOUSE IN MARSHALL, TEXAS. HE WAS SEVENTY-NINE YEARS OF AGE.

“BILLY” WAS CONCEIVED IN ECUADOR AND BORN THE SON OF MADISON AARON FURRH AND MABEL EUBANK FURRH ON SEPTEMBER 3, 1938 IN NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.

MR. FURRH WAS A FIFTH-GENERATION SON OF ELYSIAN FIELDS, TEXAS.

HE ATTENDED ELYSIAN FIELDS PUBLIC SCHOOLS, SEWANEE MILITARY ACADEMY IN SEWANEE, TENNESSEE AND GRADUATED FROM BYRD HIGH SCHOOL IN 1957. HE ENLISTED IN THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS AND WAS DISCHARGED IN 1957.HE THEN ENROLLED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS IN THE SPRING OF 1958. HE SPENT A YEAR STUDYING ABROAD IN AUSTRIA AS A PLAN II STUDENT AND GRADUATED FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS WITH A BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE IN HISTORY IN AUGUST, 1970.

HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE PHI DELTA THETA FRATERNITY. BEING A TALENTED MUSICIAN AND PIANIST, HE WAS A MEMBER OF THREE BANDS, THE HOLIDAYS ROCK AND ROLL BAND, CASPER AND THE ILLUSIONS AND THE FIAT’S.HE ATTENDED THE GOLDEN RULE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF ELYSIAN FIELDS AS A YOUTH AND WAS A MEMBER OF THE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH IN SHREVEPORT.

MR. FURRH’S CAREER WAS DIVERSE AND HE WAS INTERESTED IN VARIOUS FIELDS. HE WAS THE MANAGER OF THE AUSTIN STATE SCHOOL, THE BROWN SCHOOL AND THE BRIGADE SECURITY ALL LOCATED IN AUSTIN, TEXAS. HE WORKED FOR MANY YEARS IN THE FILM AND MUSIC INDUSTRY AND HANDLED SECURITY FOR NUMEROUS ROCK CONCERTS.HE WAS A LICENSED TEXAS REAL ESTATE BROKER AND A SUBSTITUTE TEACHER IN THE ELYSIAN FIELDS INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT. HE WAS A DEVOTED CARETAKER OF HIS BROTHER AND HIS MOTHER IN HER FINAL YEARS.

HE BEGAN A STEADFAST RELATIONSHIP WITH JANICE KAY METCALF FURRH IN 1997 AND THEY WERE MARRIED AUGUST 6, 2011 IN ELYSIAN FIELDS AT THE GOLDEN RULE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. HE WAS A LOVING, THOUGHTFUL AND DEVOTED HUSBAND.

BILLY WAS KNOWN FOR HIS KEEN SENSE OF HUMOR, MUSICAL TALENT, GENEROSITY AND GENTLE SMILE. HE WILL BE MISSED BY ALL WHO KNEW AND LOVED HIM.

MR FURRH WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HIS PARENTS, MADISON AARON FURRH, M.D. AND MABEL EUBANK FURRH, HIS GRANDPARENTS, JOHN DEWITT FURRH, SENIOR AND ZUMA PERKINS FURRH, HIS BROTHER JOHN EUBANK FURRH M.D., AND NEPHEW CHARLES DUKE FURRH.

HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE, JANICE KAY METCALF FURRH, BROTHER JOHN DEWITT FURRH III, NEPHEW JOHN EUBANK FURRH, JR. AND WIFE SANDRA, NEPHEW DOUGLASS MADISON FURRH AND WIFE CAROLINE AND NIECE LORENA FURRH DUNLAP AND HUSBAND JOEL DUNLAP M.D., AND CATHERINE PEARSON FURRH; GRAND NIECES AND GRAND NEPHEWS TAYLOR AND WALDEN FURRH, JAMES AND JACOB FURRH, AND LUCY AND HAMPTON DUNLAP; COUSINS JAMES MADISON FURRH AND WIFE GAIL, MARY FURRH GOMEZ AND HUSBAND RAFAEL AND MINDY FURRH JAY; COUSIN AND GODCHILD ERNIE SPHAR AND WIFE MONA AND THEIR CHILDREN AMANDA AND SAM; AND HIS LIFE-LONG FRIEND BUBBA WOODLEY.

THE FAMILY WOULD LIKE TO THANK DR ALAN J. BORNE, DR HERBERT MASTERS, DR KIMBERLY BARBOLLA, DWIGHT CLEMANS, TOM PROUSE, TRINITY SITTER SERVICE AND THE STAFF AT THE HERITAGE HOUSE FOR THEIR LOVING CARE.

A MEMORIAL SERVICE CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF WILIAM MADISON “BILLY” FURRH WAS HELD WEDNESDAY, MAY 30TH AT 4 PM AT THE DOWNS FUNERAL HOME. INTERNMENT WILL BE PRIVATE.

THE HONORARY PALLBEARERS WILL BE JOHN DEWITT FURRH III, JOHN EUBANK FURRH, JR., DOUGLASS MADISON FURRH, JOEL DUNLAP M.D., JAMES MADISON FURRH, BUBBA WOODLEY AND ERNIE SPHAR.
