Esperanza Mendias Acosta, 96 years old, peacefully joined our Lord on October 25, 2018 in El Paso, Texas.
Visitation was held on Sunday, October 28th at the Mt. Carmel Funeral Home in El Paso, followed by a Mass the following day, October 29th at the St. Apostle Catholic Church. Interment was in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
Esperanza was born on May 24, 1922 in Presidio, Texas to Severo and Manuela Mendias and had eight other sisters.
In 1937, she married Salvador Acosta from Redford and together they had 14 children. Throughout her life, she lived in Redford, Presidio, and settled in her beloved Marfa, Texas in 1970 where she resided until 2008, when she moved to El Paso to be closer to some of her children.
There was no obstacle she felt she could not overcome. When all her children were grown and away, she taught herself to drive at the age of
60. With a tremendous work ethic, she worked as a cook for almost three decades then continued working until her mid-80s as a caregiver, oftentimes providing care to senior citizens much younger than her. She lived a colorful life and treasured her family, friendships and the relationships she developed through her warm, energetic personality and will forever live in our hearts.
Preceded in death by her husband Salvador and sons Fernando and Arnulfo, her legacy will live through her children Abelardo, Hipolito, Leonardo, Salvador Jr., and Arturo as well as her daughters Magdalena, Herminia, Delma, Alicia, Teresa and Rebecca. Also left to cherish her memories are 52 grandchildren as well 86 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren.
Our family is so appreciative of the outpouring of support shown by so many from throughout the region who remembered and called her a friend as they joined us to say goodbye.
Grandsons serving as pall bearers during the service were Gabriel Acosta, Keith Acosta, Wally De La Rosa, Lorenzo De La Rosa, Michael Oseguera, Alex Duron, Adrian Duron, granddaughter Isabel Esperanza Acosta as well as great-grandsons Michael Hartnett and Abbott Acosta.
